The world of JRPGs is expanding into the streaming landscape. Netflix has begun developing a live-action television series based on Atlus' acclaimed Persona franchise. As first reported by Variety, the move underscores Netflix's ongoing commitment to transforming gaming IPs into high-budget serial content.
A Powerhouse Production Team
To execute the adaptation, Netflix has enlisted two industry heavyweights. Story Kitchen, known for producing Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog films, will collaborate with 21 Laps, the production company founded by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine, Stranger Things). Christopher Monfette, a veteran writer and producer for series such as Star Trek: Picard and 12 Monkeys, is attached as the showrunner and executive producer. The Live-Action Hurdle
The Persona series, which debuted in 1996 as a spin-off of Shin Megami Tensei, is famous for blending Japanese high school life with supernatural combat. While the concept of summoning "Personas" to fight evil is visually compelling, translating this aesthetic into live-action remains a significant creative challenge.Netflix has seen immense success with animated adaptations like Arcane, Castlevania, and Cyberpunk 2077. However, its track record with live-action game adaptations has been more inconsistent, as seen with the short-lived Resident Evil series.
