Honor has officially set the launch date for the Magic 9 series in China for September 28, opening pre-reservations and revealing a design heavily centered on professional imaging. The series will feature a dual 200-megapixel ARRI imaging system, designed to maintain high image quality across various shooting distances and lighting conditions. The primary sensor is specified with an f/1.57 aperture.
Pushing the limits of optical zoom
While Honor has confirmed the core ARRI setup, leaks from Digital Chat Station suggest a significant leap in zooming capabilities. The Magic 9 series could support an external 500mm teleconverter lens, providing approximately 20.8x optical zoom. This would surpass the 400mm lens of the vivo X300 Ultra, which offers roughly 16.6x zoom.
If this external lens is paired with the rumored 200MP telephoto camera, it could theoretically enable lossless-resolution zoom up to 1,000mm (approximately 41.6x). However, this capability comes with trade-offs: the lens is expected to be bulky and may require a minimum focusing distance of several meters, limiting its versatility for close-up photography.
Hardware and design leaks
Beyond the optics, further leaks point to a device optimized for power users and creators. The Magic 9 series is expected to include:
- A camera grip for a more traditional photography experience.
- An approximately 8,000mAh battery paired with a relatively small screen.
- A built-in cooling fan to manage thermal loads during intensive tasks.
- A square front-facing camera design.
This focus on high-resolution sensors follows Honor's recent strategy of integrating professional cinema technology into mobile devices, as previously seen with the Honor Robot Phone and its partnership with ARRI.
