An Xbox Series X can now run games designed for PlayStation 5. The credit goes to PS5X, a port to Xbox of the KytyPS5 emulator, developed by @maccosmo. The result was shown in a video that includes Quake II in its PS5 version, and the emulator manages to run Demon's Souls and Astro Bot above 60 fps.

The weak point is the way it runs. The project works only with Xbox's Developer Mode, which limits games to about 5 GB of memory. There is no public download, and compatibility remains restricted to a few titles.

Why it is possible

The compatibility comes from the similar hardware of the two consoles. Both use closely matched components, which allows instructions designed for the Sony system to be translated into ones the Xbox can execute. The emulation scene is pursuing the same path on PS5 itself, where the Relapse jailbreak opened the console to emulators for other platforms, as covered in PS5 can emulate Switch and Xbox with a recent jailbreak.

Performance varies a lot from one game to another. Wolverine boots, but runs at a frame rate too low to be playable. Demon's Souls and Astro Bot, on the other hand, stay above 60 fps, a figure showing how advanced the project already is for some titles.

What it changes for players

The project is not meant for everyday use. Anyone who wants to try it must enable developer mode, with the risks that come with it for the console and for ordinary use. The value of the experiment is demonstrative: it shows that the line between platforms is becoming thinner, although the road to a stable experience is still long.
