Audio-Technica has released its first wireless headphones in the StreamSet line, the ATH-M50xSTS-WL, available now at $299. Until now the series included only models connected via XLR or USB; this version brings the brand into wireless territory, aimed at people who stream live, make videos or game.
The key technical point is the connection. The headphones do not use Bluetooth, because streaming and gaming require ultra-low latency. According to the source, the link runs at 2.4 GHz through a small USB transceiver that plugs into PCs and consoles such as the PS5 and Switch 2. The battery reportedly lasts around 24 hours and charges via USB; while charging, the headphones can still work over a wired connection.
Otherwise the design closely follows the original wired ATH-M50xSTS. The microphone uses the company's 20 Series technology: a cardioid condenser on a flexible boom that mutes instantly when flipped up. The drivers are the same 45 mm units found in the ATH-M50x, the company's studio monitor headphone, which one reviewer says sounds great.
Noise cancellation is adaptive, with two selectable levels. The company says an algorithm continuously monitors the audio input to prioritize the user's voice over ambient sounds such as PC fans and air conditioners. Comfort and sound quality are balanced with two interchangeable earpad types: one for music listening, the other a breathable mesh for long streaming and gaming sessions.
The launch joins a segment that has grown crowded: Sony's ECM-W5 kit records 32-bit float, Elgato's Wave Go offers a dual-mode wireless microphone, and Nothing and iQOO have presented headphones with dedicated connectivity. Audio-Technica's difference is starting from a model already known to audio professionals and adding wireless freedom without changing its sound signature.
For users of the wired model, the wireless version mainly offers freedom of movement during live sessions. At $299 it sits in the upper tier of gaming headsets. For Europe there is no release date or official euro price yet; a list price of 279 euros is circulating.
