ChatGPT can now reach into the email and calendar of people who use iCloud. OpenAI has added two plugins, one for Mail and one for Calendar, that let the chatbot read and create events, search messages, reply and send emails, and look up contacts, all without leaving the conversation.
The calendar plugin works with events visible in the iPhone Calendar app and in any third-party app that syncs with iCloud. The mail plugin covers iCloud inboxes ending in @icloud.com, @me.com or @mac.com. Gmail, Outlook and other accounts set up in the Mail app stay out of reach.

Connecting the two services requires an app-specific password, generated in the Apple account settings, for both mail and calendar. According to OpenAI, the plugins are available on every plan, on the web, desktop and iOS.
The move also extends to Dots, the proactive agent OpenAI introduced last month, which can use iCloud access as well. The chatbot thus gains a slice of personal data on Apple services that it previously lacked, within a boundary defined by dedicated credentials.
The closest precedent is the Google access, already extended to multiple Gmail and Calendar accounts last August. With iCloud, OpenAI covers the Apple ecosystem, where users until now had to rely on copy and paste.

Who benefits most
The feature is most useful for people who live almost entirely inside Apple services. Anyone using another inbox for work will still need a different app. How much users will trust the chatbot to send messages in their name remains to be seen.
