Google has officially transitioned Chrome to a two-week release cycle, starting with the rollout of version 153 on September 8, 2026. This move accelerates the delivery of security patches and new features across desktop, Android, and iOS platforms, cutting the previous four-week milestone cadence in half.
The shift is a direct response to an evolving security landscape where AI is increasingly used to discover and exploit vulnerabilities. By increasing the frequency of updates, Google aims to protect users against "fast-moving threats" and reduce the window of exposure for critical bugs. This strategy follows a broader trend in browser development, as Firefox also moved to a 14-day cycle earlier this year.
Smaller scopes, faster isolation
Under the new cadence, each individual update will have a smaller scope. Google explains that reducing the amount of code changed per release allows for faster regression isolation, making it easier to identify and fix bugs introduced by a specific update without delaying the entire pipeline. For web developers, this means modern features and interoperability updates will reach users more quickly and with greater confidence.
Enterprise and stability options
While the Stable channel now updates every two weeks, Google is maintaining the Extended Stable channel for enterprise administrators and Chromium embedders. This specific track continues to operate on an eight-week cycle (e.g., moving from version 156 to 160), providing the necessary lead time for IT departments to validate updates before deployment. However, Google recommends that most enterprise users migrate to the two-week Stable option for better security.
This acceleration complements other recent efforts to harden the browser, such as eliminating the need for restarts during updates and leveraging AI to automate the patching process, which previously allowed Google to resolve over 1,000 bugs in a single month.
Chrome 153 is currently rolling out, with version 154 scheduled for release on September 22.
