Blackmagic Design has launched DaVinci Resolve 21.1, a major update that shifts the software's relationship with artificial intelligence from internal tools to open integration. The centerpiece of this release is the native support for a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, allowing editors to connect external AI assistants such as Claude, Claude Code, and ChatGPT Codex directly into their workflow.

Unlike previous AI implementations that relied on built-in models, this approach enables users to leverage their own AI subscriptions. Editors can now use natural language to analyze projects, organize media, adjust settings, and perform batch processing. Practical applications include requesting the AI to create highlight sequences from long-form video, remove unwanted clips, and trigger rendering processes.

This move aligns DaVinci Resolve with a broader industry trend toward agentic workflows, mirroring the logic seen in Palmier Pro, which also utilizes MCP to allow agents like Claude and Cursor to manipulate the timeline. While Adobe has pursued a similar path with its AI Assistant in Premiere, Blackmagic's implementation focuses on connectivity to established LLMs rather than a proprietary chat tool.

Beyond AI: The Photo Page and Technical Optimizations

The update introduces a dedicated Photo page, effectively integrating professional still image editing into the post-production pipeline. This allows photographers to apply Hollywood-grade node-based color grading tools directly to still images, bridging the gap between photography and cinematography.

On the technical side, DaVinci Resolve 21.1 introduces several performance and compatibility enhancements:

  • Hardware Acceleration: GPU-accelerated HTJ2K decoding via Kakadu and hardware-accelerated HEIC decoding for Apple Silicon.
  • System Support: Native support for NVIDIA RTX Spark systems on Windows.
  • Automation: 20 new scripting APIs with integrated console support for more precise workflow automation.
  • Tooling: Over 100 new tools and controls, including enhanced multicam controls, an updated trim editor, and five new Krokodove shapes.

Blackmagic Cloud Presentations has also been updated to include subtitle support, annotation sharing, and replies. The update is free for all users of DaVinci Resolve 21, including those on the Studio version.
