Blizzard is bringing Diablo to the tabletop. The new title is called Diablo: Unbound and is developed by Glass Cannon Unplugged, the studio behind tabletop adaptations of Frostpunk, Apex Legends, Dying Light and Don't Starve. The game was revealed at Spiel Essen, the largest board game event in the world, and it mirrors the video game series in the way it combines action and combat.

According to the studio, it is a highly replayable cooperative "dungeon battler" with hack-and-slash-inspired gameplay. One to four players battle through dungeons, fight evil and collect increasingly powerful gear. Glass Cannon Unplugged CEO Jakub Wiśniewski explains the choice of term: "You don't crawl through dungeons. You battle your way down. That's why we call it a dungeon battler."

Classes, structure and mechanics

The game blends deck-building with dice-rolling mechanics. Four classes familiar from the series are playable: Barbarian, Rogue, Sorceress and Paladin. Each has its own skill tree, abilities and progression. Additional classes will be unlocked through stretch goals and future expansions.

The campaign spans three acts, each made up of three dungeon levels, with a powerful boss at the end of each. Each dungeon takes about 60-90 minutes, and a full act about three to four hours. Between dungeons, players enter a Town Phase to upgrade skills, manage loot and respec. After the campaign, an endgame mode called Torment lets players face the board game's bosses in their ultimate form.

Timing and demo

The Gamefound campaign will launch in Q1 2027. Until then, Glass Cannon Unplugged will reveal more details over the coming months. Attendees at Spiel Essen, October 22-25, can try an early build at the studio's booth in Hall 1.

The studio already has a track record of adapting video games, and this title extends Blizzard's presence in tabletop, alongside the franchise projects announced this year, including the Netflix animated series and the upcoming Diablo 5.
