Black Forest Labs has launched Flux 3 Image, the image-generation and editing model in its Flux 3 family. Its central feature is multi-step editing: the company says the model can make a change without altering other parts of an image. For anyone working on an existing scene, that means making adjustments in stages without each new instruction also changing details they wanted to keep.

The model handles text-to-image generation and edits to existing images, as well as text rendering and photorealism. Users can compose scenes with boxes that indicate where elements should go; Black Forest Labs also says the model supports up to ten reference images and outputs up to 4K.

The ability to make successive edits is the most relevant part for practical use. With image generators, a request to retouch one detail can unintentionally change parts of the image far from the intended area. Black Forest Labs says Flux 3 Image is designed to preserve the rest of a composition through repeated edits. That makes the feature useful not only for generating images from scratch, but also for refining a single image over several steps.

Another part of the Flux 3 family

Flux 3 Image is the image-focused component of Flux 3, introduced in July as a multimodal model that also covers video, audio and action prediction. The company described those capabilities as parts of a unified architecture; today's release brings its image-generation and editing side to market. The earlier announcement of Flux 3 outlined the wider project, which aims to handle images, video and audio within the same model.

The release also targets developers and businesses. Black Forest Labs plans to license commercial model weights so companies can run and fine-tune the model on their own infrastructure. An open-weight version, with weights available for independent use and deployment, is expected in the coming weeks. For now, companies that want to run the model themselves can do so through commercial licensing.

Black Forest Labs also says API access is 50% off through October 8. The discount applies to using the model through an application programming interface, which lets developers integrate generation and editing into apps or services; it does not change the terms announced for commercial licenses.

The launch comes one day after Ideogram 4.5, which also offers localized edits intended to preserve the rest of an image. Both models address a practical problem with image generators: keeping a composition stable while changing one detail. Flux 3 Image adds box-guided scene composition and reference images to that editing approach; the next step announced by Black Forest Labs is the release of open weights.
