Three months after Elon Musk's promise, Grok has posted on its X account the first episode of its AI-generated version of Homer's Odyssey. The seven-minute video is presented as "Episode 1 of our Odyssey series", made with Grok Imagine in collaboration with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker, both specialists in AI filmmaking. The post carried no further statement, and the material was shared on Friday, October 23.

The promise dates back to July, when Musk wrote that before the end of 2026 Grok Imagine would make a "historically accurate" full-length film true to Homer's art. The tweet came with a three-minute AI-generated short posted by an X user. The project quickly drew reactions: Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson replied on social media that Musk "doesn't know shit about cinema" and that his opinions on art are "worthless".

The backdrop is Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, released in June to critical acclaim, which Musk had attacked over the casting of Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy and Elliot Page as Sinon. Musk called Nolan an "anti-White racist" and said he had cast Nyong'o only because "he wants the awards". The Grok video is therefore also a direct answer to that production.

Reviews have been unimpressed. TechCrunch, which called the footage watchable but short on artistry and momentum, noted that the images are less ugly than expected and more convincing than other experiments in the sector. The result is nonetheless far from Nolan's scale, shot across six countries with a cast and crew of thousands.

The work follows China's first fully AI-generated film, which is struggling at the box office. On the production side, the technology is already present in Promise's AI horror films at half the price, where the studio of Dave Clark claims costs up to 50% lower. Grok's video remains a short proof of concept rather than a full film: the promise of a full-length film by year-end has not been kept, and the next expected step is the release of further episodes.
