OBS Studio 33.0 was released on October 23, 2026, and behind a list of fixes that looks routine lies the heaviest change in recent development cycles: the Chromium Embedded Framework engine jumps from version 127 to 150. According to the release notes, this covers more than two years of accumulated changes, a leap that directly affects the browser sources and dock windows many users rely on for overlays, chat and widgets during live streams.
The second major intervention concerns plugin loading. Version 33.0 introduces rewritten loading code that separates official plugins from third-party ones into distinct folders. Legacy locations remain supported until OBS 34, so users who install extensions manually need not act immediately, but the migration path is already mapped out. For plugin developers, this means updating the structure of their packages before the next major release.
Among other changes, OBS 33.0 improves source snapping in the video preview mode, makes spinbox behavior for numeric values more predictable, and enables NVIDIA NVENC encoding on ARM64 platforms with NVIDIA GPUs. Support for the latest NVIDIA Broadcast SDKs for audio and video effects is included, along with better detection of full-screen games in Game Capture mode. The software also drops support for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, a detail that matters for anyone distributing OBS on older LTS releases.
The release follows release candidate 33.0.0-rc2, published on GitHub on October 16 as a near-final version. The CEF update is one reason the project took time to complete this major version: upgrading a Chromium engine across four generations brings regressions that must be verified on every operating system.
For users, the practical consequence is simple: after updating, it is worth checking that browser sources, widgets and overlay extensions still behave as before, and reporting any anomalies to the project. The next expected step is the definitive plugin migration planned with OBS 34, when the old locations will stop being supported.
