OpenAI has reversed course. After subscriber backlash, the company has doubled usage limits for the ChatGPT Pro plans at $100, $200 and $500, along with Business Premium, effective immediately. The planned 50% cut will not go ahead.
The reversal also covers Pro 200 subscribers. OpenAI had planned to reduce usage allowances for these users after October 29, 2026; that decision has been withdrawn, and the allowances are now doubled from their previous level.

The background explains why the reversal came now. The Pro 200 plan had already been at the centre of tension: in September OpenAI suspended new sign-ups to the $200 plan because of very high demand for GPT-6 Astra, admitting it was losing money on Pro subscriptions because usage had far exceeded expectations. Shortly after, with the launch of the Pro 500 plan, OpenAI halved several limits of the $200 plan, a move users described as a "nerf". Doubling the limits now reverses that line, at least for the time being.
The competitive picture explains the weight of the decision. According to OpenAI's description, Pro plans include Pro models, Codex, deep research, image creation, memory and file uploads, with offerings that grow from Pro 100 to Pro 200 to Pro 500. One source explicitly links the move to heightened competition with Anthropic. For a paid service, losing the most demanding subscribers would be a concrete risk.
The sources also point to a second commitment: OpenAI has promised to keep usage of Dots, its persistent agents, independent, so that Pro quotas are not affected by this feature. The technical details of this separation are not yet clear.
For anyone paying for a Pro plan, the news is simple: limits are not falling, they are rising. Whether the reversal will last, or whether OpenAI will revisit quotas once demand grows again, remains to be seen.
