Human-in-the-loop operation

Despite the advanced appearance, these robots are not autonomous agents. The service relies on teleoperation: each machine is remotely controlled by a human operator assisted by AI software. This approach allows the robots to navigate unpredictable home environments more effectively than current autonomous systems, although it necessitates that an adult remain present during the service visit.

The hardware is built upon the Unitree G1 platform, enhanced with custom AI software from Tau Robotics. These robots—distinguished by their unique router-like heads and frog-shaped eyes—can perform tasks such as vacuuming, wiping surfaces, and cleaning refrigerator interiors. Rather than selling the hardware, Tau operates on a service-based model where staff bring the robot to the customer's location.

Privacy and accessibility trade-offs

CEO Alexander Koch positions the service as a way to democratize home cleaning for those who cannot afford traditional human services. However, the model introduces privacy concerns; since operators must see inside the home to control the robot, users must agree to terms regarding the recording and transmission of footage from their private spaces.

The road to autonomy
