The San Francisco startup is developing Phantom, a humanoid robot designed not only for industrial automation but explicitly for future warfare, positioning itself as the only entity in the US and Europe openly pursuing this strategy.

The company's core technology is Phantom, a sleek, all-black humanoid standing roughly six feet tall and capable of carrying nearly 90 pounds. The system perceives its environment through a head-mounted camera array providing a 360-degree field of vision, operating either autonomously via embedded AI or through remote human piloting. While military applications are the most controversial, Phantom has already shown concrete commercial success: it aided in the production of over 24,000 cars last year.

The expansion into the military sector is backed by estimated $24 million in defense-related deals to test models across various US military branches. Currently, the focus is on logistical and reconnaissance tasks, such as mapping buildings before human soldiers enter. This proximity to power, combined with a company valuation that could reach $3 billion, accelerates the adoption of technologies that the UN and the Catholic Church are calling to ban. Human Rights Watch warns against applying a "move fast and break things" approach to lethal weapon systems in the absence of robust international legal safeguards.

The introduction of Phantom into the defense sector marks a transition from aerial and ground drones to anthropomorphic robotics in combat.
