The animated Bloodborne movie now has an official director, but no one can yet say who it is. Seán "Jacksepticeye" McLoughlin, the YouTuber producing the project with PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation, confirmed it in a new interview. The film was announced at CinemaCon in April.
According to McLoughlin, the work is well beyond where it stood back then. "Things are obviously much more along the pipeline than they were back then," he said, explaining that much of the story is already mapped out and that people are in place to make the film happen. Asked who is attached, he avoided names, saying he hopes to soon announce who is involved and where the story is heading.
On story details McLoughlin stayed vague, but made clear he wants to stay true to the game's world and setting. He also hinted the film may not be a one-to-one retelling of the game's plot, pointing to recent adaptations that took creative liberties, such as Fallout and Resident Evil. For Bloodborne that freedom matters: much of its story is derived from vague item descriptions and subtext, leaving plenty of room to build an original tale.
The project is described as an R-rated animated feature, produced with Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, with McLoughlin as co-producer. The stated aim is to keep the gory, nightmarish spirit of the original. For now, audiences will have to wait for the next announcements to learn who is directing and where the story goes.
