Windows 11 reopens Microsoft Edge faster when the browser is already running in the background. The credit goes to update KB5127936, released to the Release Preview channel for builds 26200.9807 on version 25H2 and 26300.9807 on 26H2. Edge is the first application to benefit from the accelerated launch that Microsoft is gradually rolling out across Windows 11 apps.
What changes in the launch path
Until now, when a single-instance program was called while already open, Windows started a temporary process. That process checked whether the app was running, forwarded the request to the existing instance and then exited. The intermediate step slowed the window's appearance under heavy load. With KB5127936, Windows routes the request directly to the running instance, skipping that step. Microsoft says removing it shortens the launch path and makes Edge more responsive, especially on busy devices.

The test numbers and their limits
Windows Latest checked the behaviour on a virtual machine with 4 GB of RAM. Before the update, reopening Edge right after a restart was acceptable, but with Microsoft Store and Paint running the delay was evident. After installation, Edge opened as fast as before when used alone, but much faster with the other apps running. The test concerns warm reopening, not cold start. The gain is real but not universal: if the browser is not running, there is no benefit, and the feature requires Startup Boost to be on in Edge.
Why the change matters
The change is part of a wider effort to make Windows 11 snappier, after months of criticism about system responsiveness. Microsoft has worked on other fronts too, such as the Start menu, the taskbar and File Explorer, and the mechanism now extended to Windows apps aims to cut waiting times across the board. Users who keep the browser open while working with many applications benefit most. Those who use the PC for a few tasks at a time will notice less difference.

Availability and next steps
The update installs through Windows Update, but the Edge feature is activated gradually and may not appear right after installation. Some sites explain how to force it with command-line tools, a procedure Microsoft has not officially documented. Microsoft has not given a precise timeline for extending accelerated launch to other applications.
