The upcoming Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 will introduce a feature called Recaps, an AI-driven utility designed to automatically log and summarize a user's day. By ambiently monitoring the microphone, GPS, and other sensor data, the system can generate coherent summaries of activities and conversations, reducing the need for manual note-taking.
Privacy and On-Device Processing
To address privacy concerns regarding always-listening devices, Apple is implementing a strict opt-in model. According to reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the feature will not store raw audio recordings nor provide full transcripts of conversations. Instead, it relies on new hardware—specifically the T8320 chip—to securely process audio samples on-device. This hardware requirement means Recaps will not be available for older generations of the wearable.
Integration with Siri AI
The generated summaries will be stored within the new standalone Siri app, a key part of the watchOS 27 update. Users will be able to leverage Siri AI's personal context features to query their own history or follow up on specific events recorded during the day. The system offers flexibility in monitoring, allowing users to enable Recaps for the entire day or restrict them to specific geographic locations.
This move places Apple in direct competition with a new wave of AI wearables focused on intimate personal assistance and memory logging. While the Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Series 12 maintain their existing designs, the internal shift toward secure audio processing marks a strategic pivot toward proactive AI assistance.
