Netflix is developing a live-action series based on PUBG, Krafton's battle royale that sold over 75 million copies before going free-to-play. Donald Glover will direct and star in the adaptation, which he is writing and executive producing with his brother Stephen Glover.
The project came together after lengthy negotiations, with Netflix bringing Glover on board. The Emmy winner, known for Atlanta and Community, left FX in 2021 for a large exclusive overall deal at Amazon MGM Studios. That deal has since been renewed as a first-look pact, allowing him to work with other studios. He remains an executive producer on Amazon's Mr. and Mrs. Smith and is rumored to reprise his role as Mr. Smith in the second season, likely in a limited capacity.
Other executive producers named by the sources are Michael Schaefer for Neon TV, Fam Udeorji for Gilga, and Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee for LV3H, Krafton's entertainment division. According to the same sources, Schaefer joined Neon after Department M acquired a stake in the studio.
PUBG, originally PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, has set seven Guinness World Records since its 2017 debut. In 2020 Krafton announced plans for a film and TV series based on the franchise, and LV3H is now developing the brand's expansion into original content. An animated series from Adi Shankar, announced in 2021, was previously in development at Netflix.
The project fits Netflix's growing slate of game adaptations, including a live-action Assassin's Creed series, a live-action Gears of War film, animated series based on Minecraft, Magic: The Gathering and Clash of Clans, and an Overcooked competition series. The same trend includes the animated Diablo series that Blizzard and Netflix announced at BlizzCon 2026.
