The project previously teased in 2023 as 'Project Life is RPG' has finally been unveiled during a Nintendo Direct presentation. Marvelous has officially titled the game Eternal Anima, a turn-based JRPG designed as a throwback to the classics of the late 1990s and early 2000s, but featuring modern visuals.

The title is spearheaded by a team of industry veterans with deep ties to Square Enix and Atlus. The project is led by director Katsuhisa Higuchi, known for his work on Chrono Trigger and several Final Fantasy titles, as well as Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. The narrative is crafted by scenario writer Kazushige Nojima, a key figure behind Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and X, while Keisuke Makino, who worked on Persona 5 and Metaphor: ReFantazio, serves as the story concept writer.

Time travel and combat mechanics

The plot centers on a protagonist named Wade, who navigates the kingdom of Urvis Ael—a place where yearning for a better future is considered a capital offense. The core gameplay revolves around time travel, as Wade uses his psychic abilities to dive into memories of the past to correct present wrongs.

This temporal mechanic extends directly into the turn-based combat. Wade can glimpse future events during battles, allowing players to predict enemy attacks and execute effective counters, adding a layer of strategic depth to the traditional encounter system.

Platforms and release date

Eternal Anima is scheduled for release on March 4, 2027. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC via Steam, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The latter aligns with previous reports on Switch 2's third-party roadmap, which highlighted the console's capacity for high-profile JRPGs.

Marvelous Europe and Marvelous USA will handle publishing for their respective regions in Europe, Australia, and the Americas.
