The Pacific Ocean is accumulating thermal energy at a rate that threatens to rewrite climate history. According to data from Berkeley Earth and NOAA, the current El Niño is on track to become the most powerful event in at least 150 years, surpassing previous records by what scientists describe as a "mind-blowing margin."
The synergy with anthropogenic warming
The primary danger lies in the overlap between this natural cycle and human-caused climate change. Zeke Hausfather of Berkeley Earth warns that this combination could push global average temperatures in 2027 as high as 1.7°C above pre-industrial levels. Such a surge would push the planet past the 1.5°C threshold established by the Paris Agreement.
While NOAA estimates an 80% chance of a "very strong" event by year-end, other models suggest even more extreme peaks. Median estimates for Pacific sea surface temperatures are approximately 0.8°C higher than the previous record set during 2015–16.
Economic and ecological fallout
The repercussions extend far beyond temperature charts. Historical data shows that strong El Niño events carry heavy price tags: the 1997–98 event shrank global economic growth by roughly $5.7 trillion. Justin Mankin from Dartmouth College suggests the current event could lead to economic losses of up to $10 trillion by 2032.
Ecologically, the impact is equally severe. Rising ocean temperatures accelerate coral bleaching and diminish the oceans' capacity to sequester carbon from the atmosphere, potentially accelerating the overall warming trend.
Forecasts and uncertainties
Despite the alarming trends, some researchers caution that climate models are imperfect predictions. The true nature of this event will only be confirmed at its peak. However, the vigorous atmosphere-ocean coupling observed since June suggests that El Niño conditions will persist until at least April 2027, making it highly likely that 2026 will also be a record-breaking year for heat.
