Half-Life 3 has become a running joke: the mere mention of its name is enough to get fans talking. This time, though, the words didn't come from a leaker but from a Valve employee. During a Q&A session at GameSoundCon, the audio industry event held in Burbank, California, composer and developer Mike Morasky said «HLX», the codename that has circulated for years as the name of the next chapter of the series.
The remark came almost by accident. Discussing HDR, the technology that widens the range of brightness and colour in images, Morasky said: «Deadlock has its own version of HDR, HLX has its own version, and so on». The reference to Deadlock, Valve's multiplayer game still in development, is what drew attention: nobody expected the name HLX to come from an employee in a public setting. A video of the line was shared on X by Tyler McVicker, and the detail was picked up by many gaming outlets.

To understand why the line carries weight, it helps to look back. HLX has appeared in game files and datamine analyses for some time, and as early as 2021 dataminers noticed repeated references to a project with that name. In recent years the rumours have grown more concrete: in 2024 McVicker shared findings from his file work, arguing they pointed to a fully fledged new Half-Life game, and last year he claimed the title was playable from start to finish. Valve has never confirmed any of this. The series' history matters too: the last numbered entry is Half-Life 2: Episode Two, and Half-Life 2: Episode Three, announced as part of a trilogy, was abandoned around 2009. Gabe Newell later confirmed that a Half-Life 3 had been in development around 2013 and 2014 before being shelved, because it was built on Source 2, the engine still unfinished at the time.
In the wider context, Morasky's remark is not an announcement. No official images were shown, no date or platform was given, and Valve has not commented. The lack of any visual material suggests the reference slipped out in the moment rather than being part of planned communication. What remains is a concrete but limited fact: an internal name that a member of the studio used in public, without saying what it refers to.

For players, the immediate consequence is renewed waiting. After years of rumours and false starts, every new detail is read as a possible signal, but the recent history of the series counsels caution. Until Valve makes an official announcement, HLX will remain a codename mentioned in passing, and Half-Life 3 an open question.
