iPhone users who prefer Google Maps to Apple's navigation can now talk to Gemini while driving. Gemini in navigation comes to Maps for CarPlay: a Gemini icon appears at the bottom right of the map, and tapping it lets you ask the assistant questions.

Google describes it as a conversational way to find stops along the route, report traffic disruptions and get information about places. Gemini also handles multi-part questions well: you can ask which park has a good view over the city, when to go and what the weather will be like, then ask it to start navigating there while avoiding tolls.

The feature is available from today for US users, and Google has confirmed that a global rollout is already underway. No countries beyond that or a date for Italy have been specified.

The CarPlay debut follows the Android Auto launch, where Gemini has been available for a year. In September Microsoft brought Copilot to Apple's system, leaving Gemini as the major chatbot still missing, and Meta AI did the same at the end of August. With this step Google closes the gap.

According to reports, it is the first time Google Maps offers a voice assistant feature directly on the CarPlay screen.
