A PS5 emulator for Android has taken its first concrete step: CapyPS5 can run a handful of PlayStation 5 games at playable frame rates on Android handhelds. The test was run on an AYN Odin 3, a high-end Android portable console.

The developer is Ghael, already behind Lemon, the Switch emulator for Android derived from Yuzu. CapyPS5 is based on the FEX x86-64 emulator and the KytyPS5 compatibility layer, which reproduces PS5 behaviour on different hardware. The current release is v0.0.1, in alpha.

Which games run and how fast

Compatibility is still narrow. According to the project's compatibility table, some titles reach 60 fps on the Odin 3, mostly 2D games. The heavier 3D titles remain out of reach: this is not a playable PS5 library yet.

The project is also available on GitHub, where the required graphics drivers are listed by chip. On the Odin 3 the system driver for Adreno 830 works; other Adreno or Mali chips need Turnip or PanVK drivers, downloadable from the app settings.

A technical milestone, not a console replacement

That PS5 code runs on mobile hardware is remarkable in itself. But the road to everyday use is still long: for now the emulator demonstrates feasibility rather than offering a usable game library.

The PS5 emulation scene on Android is moving fast. The KytyPS5 project behind this work has also been used to run PS5 games on Xbox Series X, with the limit of working only in developer mode.
