Rockstar has revealed the size of the Grand Theft Auto 6 map, and the figure is striking: Leonida, the fictional Florida where the game is set, is almost as large as the maps of the studio's last three games combined. According to co-studio head Aaron Garbut, Vice City and its surrounding areas are almost as big as Grand Theft Auto 4, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 together. Given the size of those titles, the comparison says a lot about the scale of the world.

Size is not the only point, though. Garbut argues that Rockstar is focusing on density too: the game has an order of magnitude more interiors than the studio's previous games. The attention also extends to back alleys. "Every back alley is as densely detailed and interesting as the others," Garbut told Edge. "You can go anywhere, any random location, and so many people have thought about that location." The point is that there are no empty spaces built only to fill the map.

The work on the quieter areas stems from a specific problem. The lukewarm reception to the sparse northern areas of Grand Theft Auto 5, such as Senora Desert, shaped the creation of Leonida's outer regions. Even the most barren biomes of the new game should therefore offer more to find.

Garbut says that, after years of development, there are still areas he has yet to explore. The game leans heavily on small details spread across such a vast territory: billboards with tongue-in-cheek parodied brands, and the life of street corners and back alleys.

Rockstar has confirmed November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is still no official date for PC, which is expected in the first quarter of 2027. Rockstar has typically left about seven months between console and PC releases, while GTA 5 took around a year and a half to make the jump.

The design of Leonida therefore combines scale and density: the map is large, but Rockstar wants every area to have something to offer.
